Nonallergic rhinitis is a condition that causes chronic sneezing, congestion, itchy or watery eyes, or runny nose. These symptoms mimic those of allergies, but originate from a non allergic source. Unlike an allergy it does not involve the immune system. An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to a harmless substance known as an allergen. Non allergic rhinitis is caused by irritants or other stimuli that cause symptoms identical to those caused by allergens.
Symptoms can be triggered by eating, cologne or perfumes, certain odors, physical irritants like dust and pollutants, and temperature changes. The most common symptoms are stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, post nasal drip.
