What to Expect During a Tympanoplasty Surgery

During a tympanoplasty, we will typically make an incision behind the ear or within the ear canal to access the middle ear. The procedure involves:

• Repairing the Eardrum: If there is a hole, tear, or perforation in the eardrum, we will carefully repair it using graft material, often taken from the patient’s own tissues or from a synthetic material.
• Addressing Middle Ear Problems: If there are any issues with the small bones of the middle ear (ossicles), such as damage or immobilization, we may also correct these problems during the procedure.
• Restoring Hearing: The primary goal of a tympanoplasty is to improve or restore hearing that might have been affected due to the damaged eardrum. By repairing the eardrum, sound vibrations can once again be properly transmitted to the middle and inner ear, resulting in improved hearing.

Tympanoplasty can be done on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can often go home on the same day as the surgery. Recovery is pretty simple and may involve avoiding water contact with the ear for several weeks.
