Allergic rhinosinusitis is a condition comprised by the combination of two disease processes; allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis. This is a common disease combination seen in the Coastal Bend. Patients with chronic allergic rhinitis over time often experience progressive inflammation that worsens sinusitis. The sinus inflammation results in chronic, recurrent sinusitis. Patients suffering from this benefit from treating the condition as the two separate disease processes that it consists of, rather than a single disease.
Chronic sinusitis does not respond to allergy treatment, and allergies do not respond to chronic sinusitis management.
